Today we celebrate the memorial of St Josephine Bakhita

St Josephine Bakhtia was born in Sudan in 1869 where she had a healthy, happy life until she was kidnapped by slave traders. During her 12 years of slavery she had many owner, not all of her were kind to her. Her final owners lived just outside of Venice where she worked as a nanny for 3 years. She first encountered Christianity while her owners left her in the care of the Canossian sisters in Venice. When her owners came to collect her from the convent she refused to leave. After 3 days of her owners trying to persuade her to come with them, the took the matter to court and lost.

She was received into the catholic church in 1890 and 3 years later entered the Canossian sister and spent the rest of her life in Italy where she was known for her gentle voice and smile.
