Do We Need to See Photos of Dead Children?
The story behind the photograph of the little boy washed up on a beach has dominated the news this week. At mass today out priest spoke about it and how he hoped it would change government’s minds about the refugee crisis that has been ongoing all summer for Britain and other countries. Of course Britain and individuals are called to be compassionate, generous and loving to all these people who need our help. It is great that some people have woken up to the human suffering of this crisis. Sometimes we need an image to wake us up before we can truly be shaken from our comfortable lives and do something to help!
However, in amongst this story I hear the cries of all the innocent, unborn babies who will be killed today all over Britain and no one wants to show a photo of their bodies. In the US, the prolife movement have exposed what Planned Parenthood, the biggest abortion provider, has done with the aborted babies and is truly too awful for me to think about. The video evidence of this has been released and abortion is even more on the agenda in American politics which is a good thing.
In this country we have a deep silence which shrouds the abortions which occur every 3 minutes in this country. Some people stand outside Marie Stopes clinics with placards showing the remains of babies after abortions because they believe this is the only way to wake people up to the reality of the humanity of the unborn child. Is it the only way? I have never forgotten seeing “The Silent Scream” when I was a teenager, it has stayed with me but I never want to see it again. Something tells me there must be another way to alert people into action so that they do not forget the children, the mothers and fathers who are damaged by an abortion.
What is clear is that we need to speak out always for the unborn child and never let these tragedies be forgotten.
