Feast of St Bartholomew

Image of St. Bartholomew

Bartholomew, one of the Twelve in the synoptic lists of the Apostles, is traditionally identified with Nathanael of John’s Gospel.  He is believed to have preached the Gospel in India and greater Armenia.  Saint Pantaenus testified that Bartholomew had brought a copy of Saint Mathew’s Gospel to the people of this vast region.  Bartholomew is said to have suffered the torture of being flayed or skinned.  His token in the Church’s art is oddly shaped knife, the tool for the removal of his skin, or the skin itself.  In his Final Judgement in the Sistine Chapel the artist Michelangelo painted his own face on Bartholomew ‘s skin.
