Standing Up to Selective Abortion

We hear more and more about the push to offer and urge women with pregnancies involving multiple babies, being urged to abort one or more to “save” one of the babies.  It is quite incredible how we have come to offer death as an option of our own children and present this as the “best” thing for the mother and family.

Jamie Halsey, the Olympic gynmast was expecting triplets and was offered a selective abortion for two of her girls to save the third girl.  This is how she handled it,

‘”Other people have triplets and I wasn’t prepared to abort two healthy babies just to make life easier. My initial emotional reaction was ‘I can’t do that. I will keep them all and carry on with the pregnancy whatever. Collectively we made the decision we would give the three babies the best opportunity we possibly could to come into the world. As sport has taught us both, all you need is a chance, positivity and the faith of others in your ability to be a success.”

It is so refreshing to see this commonsense reaction to what really is a barbaric offer from the medical profession, to choose which of her children to live and which to kill.  It plays on a woman’s vulnerability during pregnancy which is already harder than most as anyone would acknowledge.

Doctors must realise that the bond to protect their child between the mother and child is strong and must be protected no matter what, not played upon.  Many mothers are not as strong as Jamie Halsey and think that they must adhere to what the doctors say is best.  This month Jamie welcomed three healthy girls with her husband Steve and other daughter, Florence.
