What is Day for Life All About??

It’s time to have our say; to speak up and William Oddie has brought the matter to light brilliantly on his blog at The Catholic Herald http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/commentandblogs/2012/07/23/the-bishops-conference-has-decided-that-day-for-life-2012-is-all-about-the-olympic-games-every-year-its-anything-but-what-pope-john-paul-intended/ regarding the total hijacking of the annual Day for Life!

As each year has passed, the incredulity has grown regarding the theme of the Day for Life and this year is no different – the theme is, wait for it ..the olympics!

When the late  Pope John Paul II initiated this day it was quite clear and is clearly quoted in William Oddies’ article, that the day should be used to draw attention to those issues which are directly related to the right to life ie abortion, infertility treatments, embryo experimentation, marriage and procreation etc.  However, it seems the Bishops of England, Wales & Scotland seem intent on making the Day for Life theme everything except on these issues.  It would be fantastic to hear their justification of this and the thought process that brings them from

I propose that a Day for Life be celebrated each year in every country, as already established by some Episcopal Conferences. The celebration of this Day should be planned and carried out with the active participation of all sectors of the local Church. Its primary purpose (my emphasis) should be to foster in individual consciences, in families, in the Church and in civil society a recognition of the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. Particular attention should be drawn to the seriousness of abortion and euthanasia, without neglecting other aspects of life which from time to time deserve to be given careful consideration, as occasion and circumstances demand. (Evangelium Vitae 85)

to this years’ theme of “the importance of good health, care for our bodies and the importance of exercise and sporting activity.”??
