Do Disabled Unborn Children Receive Enough Care?

20Feb12

The subject of Edwards’ Syndrome has come up recently in the office because a friend recently had a baby with this same disability and told Sr Andrea the shocking story of the lack of understanding for the needs of the baby (once the syndrome was discovered) and the family.

Edwards syndrome (also known as Trisomy 18 (T18) or Trisomy E) is a genetic disordercaused by the presence of all or part of an extra 18th chromosome. It is named after John H. Edwards, who first described the syndrome in 1960.[1] It is the second most common autosomaltrisomy, after Down syndrome, that carries to term.

This genetic disorder has been gaining more publicity recently, because the Presidential candidate, Rick Santorum and his wife, Karen have been vocal in talking about their child, Bella who has Edwards’ Syndrome.  This You tube video  shows up the medical professions’ attitude to unborn and newly born babies with a disability and also the joys and challenges of having a baby that needs more care.   Mr Santorum does indeed “bare his soul” but I think he does so with compassion and a deep love for all those babies not allowed to live simply because they have a disability.

Lets’ applaud people in the public eye who aren’t afraid to stand up against abortion and in some cases infanticide.  We need to make sure mothers are ready to fight for their babies no matter what their needs are.
